At the beginning of the war, Norman Spear was serving in 14th London (London Scottish) battalion and went to France in November, 1914. Promoted to sergeant he was badly wounded at the Battle of Loos in September, 1915 and after he had recovered he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and underwent training with 50th Training Squadron. He was killed in an accident on 29th August, 1917 while flying in a Whitworth FK 8 A2730 aircraft.
